Among many companies I worked for, one was a fuel service station. It was the worst time of my life because I was not too fond of the place. I had just finished my Apprenticeship so I needed something that would give me some cash for daily necessities.
At first, it was nice because I was only there until I find a better job, something I thought was going to happen sooner, but it never did. Instead, months went by with no promises
They had very strict rules, “you can’t use the phone in front of customers, you can’t eat or chew on the pumps, you can’t wear gloves, you can’t wear your big jacket if others decide to take theirs off”, I mean in winter, they even ordered me to cut my hair on many occasions something I refused because I was so in love with my dreadlocks. You have to know and sell everything that’s in the shop while on the driveway. The constant fear of Mistry marker, who takes your weekly wage when not satisfied with your service.
But today I look back and feel some sense of gratitude because the experience I got from working in that place shaped me into the entrepreneur I am today. It helped me become a hungry and fearless salesperson because I could sell you then a newspaper that you’ll only look at the front page and give it back to me for free because you didn’t need it in the first place, but the salesperson was so good you said yes to everything.
My love for selling grew from that time, my level of confidence when talking to strangers increased significantly, I gained people skills, how to approach a stranger, and start a conversation and at some point I thought my first business was gonna be a fuel service station because the place opened my eyes to so many ideas and beautiful things that are out there waiting to be discovered.
If one day you find yourself at the worst possible place, instead of sulking, questioning why you had to be there, just learn whatever lessons you are exposed to. You may not need it at that time, but you can bank it as experience, maybe one day it will come in handy, and change your life for the better
