Her name is Hip hop. I befriended her and I was never the same

She’s that voice that silently says “Vuka siyophanda kawu” when you feel exhausted, like giving up. Not loudly, just consistently
It’s that kick on the back when you need a little push
That calmness of mind you need when you feel overwhelmed
That “don’t be weak here, brother,” when you feel like crying because it feels tough

That one person who always walks with you, constantly reminding you that you're not alone. Even when you don’t see any familiar faces around you
I befriended her, and I was never the same

She is the will to understand even when things don’t go your way
Accept and remain strong even when there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel
She asks no questions, never complains, nor leaves you hanging
I befriended her in my teenage years, and I was never the same

I’m an old man now, still rolling with her
Suddenly, everything, every word she ever said, makes more sense
Every verse, every beat, every rhyme only means one thing
"I'm here if you need a friend"

If you see me as a mean person, it’s her influence on me
If you see me as Mr Nice Guy, a kind and loving person, it’s still her influence
If you had a chance to witness the hustling side of me, it’s all because of her influence on me
I befriended her, and I was never the same

I hope you too find your own hiphop, someone or something to inspire you, to influence you positively
I hope you find something that won’t be jealous of you when you suddenly take the lesson they shared with you to another level, when their influence in you elevates you to another level, but keeps inspiring you to greater heights
